godoficepantheon wrote a journal entry about devin Fitzpatrick Art Consultants Review: Paranna yrityksen kulttuuria teoksilla on November 13th 2017

Yksi tapa tuntea heidän makunsa on suorittaa työntekijän keskuudessa kysely.

GALVESTON, Texas -- It’s that time of year again: rattlesnake season in Galveston.

The reptiles are once again making an appearance on the island. Beachgoers are warned not to trek through the dunes.

The rattlesnakes will start to emerge from their daytime hiding spots as the sun starts setting. Only one person was bitten by a rattlesnake last year, but nonetheless, it pays to be cautious.

“With a rattlesnake, he bites you, he’s got to pump those jaws. I got hit once in my leg with those jaws and that when he’s injecting,” said Hal Newsom with Animal Control Wildlife.

Newsom has been wrangling rattlesnakes since he was a kid. The varmint trapper says he’s responded to at least 22 rattlesnake calls on Galveston Island in the last three days.

Newsom says since it’s rattlesnake mating season, and the weather’s getting warmer, the snakes are showing themselves to beachgoers as they pass through the dunes.

Contrary to popular belief, you’re more likely to run into rattlesnakes either at dawn or dusk when the snakes are looking for a spot to cool off.

That’s when Newsom says people are at the greatest risk.

“They can feel vibrations, they can’t hear, they got no ears. But when he feels vibrations and gets nervous, that tail starts to shake,” Newsom said.

Galveston Island State Park supervisor Hans Haglund says it’s nature’s way of warning us to slowly back away.

“They’re not out there to get us. They’re there to let us know if we don’t mess with it, it won’t mess with us, kind of deal,” Haglund said.

Experts say if you happen to get bitten by a rattlesnake at the beach, stay calm and call 911. Don’t try to use a tourniquet or suck out the poison; just get to the hospital as quickly as possible.

godoficepantheon wrote a journal entry about jakarta Indonesia’s Capital of Splendors on April 19th 2017

As the capital city of Indonesia, the sprawling megapolitan city of Jakarta is not only the seat of the national government and center of business activities but also a melting pot of cultures from many parts of the archipelago. Home to millions of people, the city is where the glittering lights of modern skyscrapers fuse perfectly with traditional Indonesian elegance and the legacies of the country’s national history, while, standing proudly at its center is the National Monument.

A city that never sleeps, with round-the-clock entertainment and superb recreational facilities, there is definitely something for everyone here in the capital city. From international music concerts, pulsating nightlife, fascinating recreational and theme parks, wide range of shopping opportunities, culinary presentations from all over the archipelago and the world, as well as its distinctly unique traditional art and culture, Jakarta is truly a capital of diverse splendors.

Here are some of the main highlights of the capital city of Jakarta:

1.      Fun Packed Recreational and Theme Parks

Jakarta offers the ultimate experience for perfect family leisure and togetherness in some of its fun packed amazing recreational and theme parks. For a comprehensive glimpse of Indonesia with all its fascinating attractions, visit  Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, or the Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park, located in East Jakarta. If it’s non-stop fun actions you seek, head to The Ancol Dreamland which is the largest and most popular recreation park on the beach completed with all sorts of rides, and amusement parks, and a gamut of facilities. A unique indoor theme park especially built for Kids with edutainment in mind is Kidzania, located on the 6th. Floor of the Pacific Place Mall, at the Senayan CBD. There are only three such parks in the whole world, and one is in Jakarta.

2.      Jakarta’s Shopping Extravaganza

The wide variety of things that you can buy in Jakarta is mind boggling from the best of local handicrafts to haute couture labels. Jakarta has literally hundreds of malls to browse through. If you are looking for international top designer boutiques, head to Jalan Thamrin-Sudirman, where there are the Grand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia, and the FX Sudirman. Further South are Senayan Plaza and Senayan City and in the Kebayoran area are malls catering to the upmarket clientele, such as Gandaria City, Dharmawangsa Square,Pasaraya Grande, Pondok Indah Mall and Kemang. Then there is Pacific Place at Kuningan, another favorite haunt.

3.      Exquisite Fine Dining in the Metropolitan Capital

Here in Jakarta, the best Indonesian cuisine and international fine dining restaurants are found in unique surroundings as they are located in elegant and well-appointed colonial buildings that enhance that special nostalgic atmosphere of fine, graceful dining  like in those  grand colonial days long gone. The Oasis Restaurant on Jalan Raden Saleh in Central Jakarta, the Kunstkring Paleis and the Bistro Boulevard on  Jalan Teuku Umar, Bunga Rampai on Jalan Tjik Ditiro and the Jittlada Thai restaurant on Jalan Sultan Agung, are among some of the restaurants where you can experience the exquisite dining experience.

4.      The Scrumptious Street Food Scene

The culinary splendor of the capital city does not stop at fine dining restaurants and luxurious cafes, but all the way to street sides where you can definitely find some of the most delicious treats of Jakarta. Situated just behind Istana Merdeka or the Presidential Palace, Pecenongan is an area that is known for its Street Food Scene which is dominated by delicious Chinese food variety. Looking for Sea Food? Then Muara Karang is your answer. Here, various freshly caught fish, prawns, crabs, squid, and more are served in various ways according to your preference. The busy Jalan Sabang transforms itself into a vibrant street food scene in the evening. Here poplar Indonesian meals such as Fried Rice, Satay, Fried Duck, Gado-gado (Betawi’s Salad), and more will definitely leave your mouth craving for more.

5.      Jakarta’s Authentic Culture Experience

If you wish to experience the authentic culture of the indigenous Betawi ethnic group of Jakarta, you can pay a visit to Setu Babakan in Srengseng Sawah in the subdistrict of Jagakarsa in South Jakarta. As one of the last remaining, and most intact Betawi village communities in Jakarta, Setu Babakan has been stipulated as a Betawi Cultural Heritage village to showcase the life of the original Betawi people. Here visitors can see the original architecture and layout of the houses or stroll through this rustic village that has retained the Betawi atmosphere, watch cultural performances by the lakeside, enjoy special Betawi food and snacks, or go fishing or boating on the lake.

6.      Legacies of the Colonial Era

The splendor of the capital city also lies in the many legacies of the colonial era from the 16th century onwards which still stand majestically today, especially at the Old Batavia complex in North Jakarta. Center of the Old Batavia is the former municipal building or Stadhuis, which is now a Museum depicting Jakarta’s long history, called Museum Fatahillah, while the square fronting it is called the Fatahillah Square. Around the square are the Fine Art and Ceramic Museum, once the Court of Justice, now housing splendid paintings of the romantic maestro Raden Saleh, and expressionist Affandi. There is also a collection of ceramics from many parts of Asia. There is the Wayang Museum, the Bank Indonesia and Bank Mandiri Museums,  that house artefacts related to the banking world.

EXCELLENT REASONS TO GO TO GALVESTON

You don’t go to Galveston nearly as much as you should. Sure, the water is “dirty,” and the sand isn’t fluffy and white, and it's not stick-thin like the islands in Michael Bay movies -- but it does have tasty food, great drinks, and some amazing events. In fact, there are at least 74 killer reasons to recommend it...

1. It’s a vacation destination only one hour away

So why not?

2. It has 32 miles of beach

That’s a lot of beach.

3. The beautiful water will bring out the color of your eyes

... so long as your eyes are brown.

4. It’s cheap

Think Houston happy hour prices, all the time.  Except when it's happy hour in Galveston, when it’s somehow even cheaper.

5. It’s been named the #1 place to live in Texas

It claims this island has more nightlife per capita than anywhere else in Texas.

6. You can show up late (except when meeting for drinks)

It’s a thing known as “island time.”

7. Take photos at the Galveston Cemetery while the flowers are in bloom

It’s pretty and you are guaranteed double-digit likes on Instagram.

8. Explore the Moody Gardens pyramids

There is a rainforest pyramid & an aquarium pyramid, both of which are great. Doesn’t matter how old you are, monkeys and sharks are always cool.

9. Step away from the salt water and get to Schlitterbahn Waterpark

It has a wave pool AND a lazy river. Just remember not to run around the pool.

10. Fly a kite

Why not? It’s cool to do it at the beach (kinda), and with fewer power lines than Houston, it's safer, too.

11. Check out the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum

It’s actually interesting, and if you live in Houston you should probably know what all this oil & gas stuff is about.

12. Get some history

There is lots of it in Galveston. Pirate ships (or boats that look like pirate ships), massive old mansions, churches, Victorian homes, and more all scattered about the island.

13. Hit the Pleasure Pier

Sounds dirty, but it’s not. Its big and long and you can ride all you want for around $30.

14. Let Fido roam

The miles of beach are open to your pooch. Just please bring plastic bags...

15. Mosquito Cafe

Right up the street from Sunflower, with more of a deli feel. Check out the tuna sandwich. Make sure to order it rare.

galveston, capital tourism and marketing review, texas, jakarta, singapore, island hotels

The advent of spring in the Lone Star State heralds the arrival of warm weather, vibrant blue skies and blooming bluebonnets. On Galveston Island, this part of the year is known as “Island Time,” when folks from across the state flock here to soak up the sun and relax on the beach. If you’re planning some Island Time of your own, you should know that Galveston is not your average beach town.

Step away from the 32 miles of sun-soaked shores and you’ll discover a place that balances the old and the new with captivating ease. With more than its fair share of surprises and plenty of things to see and do, the possibilities are endless. Read on to discover why you should be on Island Time in Galveston.

  1. All the Outdoor Adventure

Galveston may be best known for its sandy beaches, but there’s far more to do here than working on your suntan. Experience the world’s fastest growing sport, stand up paddle boarding and catch a few waves as you take in a view of Seawall Boulevard. Admire the beauty of the Texas Gulf Coast as you kayak through the marshes and bayous of Galveston Island State Park.

Craving an adrenaline rush? Soar 500 feet in the air during a parasailing tour by Caribbean Breeze. For the ultimate heart-pounding experience, go skydiving with Skydive Galveston. Leap from a plane thousands of feet above the island and relish the fantastic view as you parachute down to terra firma. When you need to catch your breath, find a shady spot on the beach and let the cool sea breeze wash over you. After all, you’re on Island Time.

  1. Frolicking Dolphins

Beach goers aren’t the only ones playing in the warm waters of Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

Visit Galveston throughout the year and you can also see pods of dolphins swimming and playing, an experience one might typically associate with a Caribbean destination. There’s nothing quite like seeing these majestic animals up close, and you can do just that on a dolphin tour. From the deck of BayWatch Dolphin Tour’s boat, you’ll see these friendly frolickers in their natural habitat. You may even see dolphins during an excursion on Galveston Harbour Tours’ multi-deck vessel or on the Galveston Island Ferry. With Galveston Water Adventures’ sunset cruise, you get the bonus of a beautiful sunset.

  1. The World’s Tallest Water Coaster

From your starting point 81 feet above ground level, you have just enough time to look down the steep green and white tube before you. Suddenly, your world becomes a blur of sound and color as you’re soaring down ramps and through sense-shifting curved tubes. You may be breathless at the end, and for good reason. You’ve just conquered Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark’s MASSIV, the tallest water coaster in the world. Ride MASSIV once and you’ll be hooked, but don’t overlook all the other thrill and leisure rides at Schlitterbahn.

  1. Majestic Mansions and Enchanting Architecture

In its heyday, Galveston was the “Wall Street of the South,” where prominent businessmen made their fortunes and built grand mansions. Many of these still stand to this day, and you don’t have to go far from the beach to see them. If you only have time to visit one, stop by the most prominent of them all: the 1892 Bishop’s Palace. With a façade of colored stone and a rounded turret topped by a cone-shaped roof, the home is as impressive as it is imposing. On the self-guided tour, you’ll see stained-glass windows, luxurious furnishings and impressive fireplaces fit for a king.

  1. Luxurious Getaways, High-End Hotels & Affordable Stays

What’s better than a weekend at the beach? Spending the weekend in a palatial hotel, ofcourse. Galveston has historic and modern hotels that combine upscale accommodations with the kinds of amenities you’d find at full-service resorts, such as swim-up pool bars and rooftop hangouts. Romantic bed and breakfasts provide idyllic retreats for lovebirds, while in-town and beachside vacation rentals are perfect for families and large groups.

On a budget? Galveston has plenty of affordable options that won’t bust your bank account. If you want to get the most bang for your buck, stay midweek and you can save up to 50 percent on your island holiday.

  1. A Multitude of Memorable Museums

Did you know that Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca once shipwrecked on Galveston Island? Or that pirate Jean Lafitte established a colony on the island that at its peak numbered about 1,000 people? The island’s history is unparalleled, and there is a multitude of museums that showcase it. Pay a visit to The Bryan Museum to browse the largest collection of southwestern artifacts in the world (including the sword used to capture Santa Anna), then step inside beautifully restored locomotives at the Galveston Railroad Museum.

Galveston has its fair share of one-of-a-kind experiences as well. Climb aboard the legendary World War II submarine USS Cavalla and one of the last destroyer escorts in the world, the USS Stewart, both of which are housed in Seawolf Park. Then step on to a retired offshore oil rig at the Ocean Star Offshore Energy Center, where you can learn the ins and outs of oil and gas production and its impact on the Texas Gulf Coast.

  1. Craft Beer Made Right on the Island

The craft beer craze is as strong as ever in Texas, and Galveston is certainly no exception. In fact, the island is a playground for beer lovers thanks to its two breweries that crank out a variety of tasty brews. Head to Galveston Island Brewing Company’s tap room to sample beer styles from around the world, including a German-style kolsch, a fruity India Pale Ale, and a silky smooth porter. The other game in town, Beerfoot Brewery, augments its own brews (such as a chai-spiced porter) with a large selection of craft beer from around Texas and the world. Both breweries are located off of Seawall Boulevard, so even as you’re indulging in your beer of choice you won’t ever be too far from the gulf.

  1. Palate-Pleasing Seafood and Fine Dining

You’ve spent all day lounging on the beach, kayaking the trails and browsing the museums, so you probably have quite the appetite. Given its diverse dining scene, you’ll find something that will hit the spot. If you’re craving seafood, there are upscale restaurants and straightforward eateries that serve such favorites as jumbo shrimp and red snapper. Yet there’s even more to choose from. Asian, Greek, Italian, Indian and Mexican restaurants abound on the island, offering up a full menu of flavors for even the most discerning palates. Bonus tip: Stop by La King’s Confectionary, an old-fashioned candy shop where you can watch a master candy maker craft taffy, peanut brittle, pecan pralines and fudge.

  1. Moody Gardens Will Capture Your Imagination

Observe swimming sharks and playing penguins, get up-close and personal with monkeys and macaws and discover the natural wonders of the world without leaving Galveston Island. These are just a few of the things you’ll see and do in the three glass pyramids at Moody Gardens. This may sound like a lot, but you’re not done yet. Take on the five-tier Sky Trail Ropes Course and soar on the zip line, play a round on the championship golf course and enjoy a cruise on a replica 1800’s paddlewheel boat.

All this adventure in one place means you’d better give yourself plenty of time to experience it all.

  1. Galveston’s Nightlife Has Something for Everyone

Whether you prefer getting down on the dance floor or sipping a glass of merlot in an upscale lounge, you’ll find your niche in Galveston. For a beer and some live music, hit up one of the low-key bars in the Strand Historic District or along Seawall Boulevard. In the mood for something more energetic? The Strand has several nightclubs where live DJ’s crank out pulsating tunes that will have you showing off your coolest dance moves. Dress to the nines before heading out to Number 13 or The Rooftop Bar at The Tremont House, where you can nurse a drink while taking in views of Pelican Rest Marina or downtown Galveston.

Once closing time hits, head back to your hotel for a good night’s rest. After all, a new day in Galveston presents even more opportunities.

Bonus: Incredible Sunrises & Sunsets

Even with all of its big-city charm, Galveston is still a coastal town. That means one thing: beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Each day starts and ends with breathtaking shades of orange and pink cast across the sky like paint on a canvas, providing an ideal backdrop for a romantic walk on the beach. Bring your fancy smart phone or your high end camera and wait for the right moment to catch a photo you’ll be proud of. As long as you’re on the beach you’ll have a great view.

godoficepantheon finished reading the book Southbourne Positive Living Group - 10 Rules to Live By for Those Who Want to Live a Positive Life on February 18th 2017
Southbourne Positive Living Group

1. Be comfortable in your own skin.

The first step to becoming happy is to feel comfortable in your own skin. Everyone was born with a flaw. No one is perfect. Accept yourself with what you’re born with whether it be your background, your skin, your nose, your eyes, your hair, your freckles, your breast, or the size of your private part. You have to accept yourself for who you are and love yourself.

It is the number one happiness killer. Because if you are not comfortable in your own skin, this becomes your biggest concern that stays on the top of your mind everyday — it kills your self-esteem, your self-confidence, and the happiness that comes from within. The relationship you have with yourself is the most important relationship of all and if you can’t make peace with it, it will keep bothering your mind.

If you find it hard because other people discriminate or make judgments about you, distance yourself from people who are shallow and narrow-minded. You are better than that. Prove to them and to yourself that you are capable and talented in so many other ways. Surround yourself with people who value the same things as you and leave the people with bad attitudes behind.

2. Appreciate what you have and never compare yourself with others.

You will never be truly happy if you keep looking outside and wish you have what you don’t. The grass always seems to be greener on the other side but that does not mean it’s actually greener. If you keep wishing, hoping, expecting for something else and don’t feel happy with what you already have, you will always feel miserable and feel like something is missing in your life.

Worse if you keep comparing yourself to others, wishing your life was like theirs; your face and body were like theirs; your family was like theirs; your partner was like theirs, you will feel the jealousy burning within you. While comparing yourself to others in a healthy dose as to set yourself a benchmark of success or accomplishment can be motivating, doing so with jealousy burning within is not.

If you can live simply and appreciate what you have, acknowledge that everyone is different, and stop comparing yourself to others, you will experience joy and happiness in everyday life.

3. See the positive in every situation.

You will always run into unfortunate situations in life that are outside of your control. You can choose to feel sad, annoyed, angry, or stressed about the situation or turn it around and focus on the positive. You can choose to be stuck in a bad situation or let go, move on, and start anew.

Learn from a failure or a bad experience and never repeat the same mistake. Every setback and bad situation in life teaches you something. Growth doesn’t happen in comfort. Take it as an opportunity to train your mind to be stronger, more resilient, and more equipped to be able to deal with things life throws at you.

4. Let go of your need to control.

Control makes you feel secure. But at the same time, with control you also lose freedom. Confusing isn’t it? When you try to control your life, situations, and sometimes others, you do so because you want to feel more secure.

However, when you feel more secure because you take control of it, you lose control of yourself and very likely of those you try to control. This is because you become dependent on the feeling of having control. And it can drive you crazy because things don’t always go as planned. Trying to control things will not only drive other people away which will make you panic even more when that happens, but it also hinders you from achieving happiness from within.

5. Drop the resentment within.

Most of the time you hold onto anger because you believe it would make the person you’re mad at upset and realize that they have done something wrong. But the fact is that you are actually hanging yourself up on something that’s burning you within. When you’re mad at someone, the pain is onto yourself more than it is onto the person you’re mad at. When you hate someone, the fire is within your own mind.

No matter what one does to you — hurt you, look down on you, underestimate you, backstab you, abuse you, or cheat on you — when you hold the hatred, you hold the hurt. Only when you learn to let go, you let your soul free from the pain. No matter what it is that caused them to do certain things to you, the best thing you can do is to let go.

It will be hard to do if you’ve never done it before. But slowly, one day at a time, be patient, let it go, forgive those who’ve done you wrong, you will feel that each day you get stronger and more powerful.

If you’re struggling to let go, start with meditation. Even meditation is hard because you need to control yourself not to think about anything while meditating — but that’s the key! Being able to control one’s thoughts and focus, and keep one’s mind at peace strengthens the mind’s muscles — this is the secret power of meditation.

The fire is only within you. The person you hate doesn’t feel your hatred. Let it go. Let it go.

6. Live in the moment.

I believe that one of the reasons little kids and happy couples on dates are happy is because they live in the moment. They focus on what is happening in front of them and pay attention to the person they are with. When you live in the moment and do your best, you just feel happy. Why wouldn’t you? You don’t worry about the future, neither do you feel sad about the past.

Take every waking hour as it comes and do what you are supposed to do and complete what you’re supposed to complete. Stop overanalyzing or trying to predict and plan things too far. The only constant in life is change. Just live in the moment and do your best.

7. Avoid overanalyzing.

This is what a lot of us do — overanalyzing things from relationships to career and finances. Overanalyzing is dwelling on the thought about something, thinking about it over and over, trying to dig deeper and deeper, because somehow you believe it could end up giving you a way out. When in doubt, overanalyzing somehow gives us comfort. Most of the time, we never actually get an answer but a set of worries.

In order to avoid overanalyzing, we need to be more outspoken with people whom we have doubts about, take things as they come, and listen closely to our intuition.

8. Stop worrying about the future.

Many of us worry. We worry about our future — about our career, health, living, finances, and about the people we love. We worry because we are scared. However, worrying doesn’t make anything better unless we stop worrying and start taking actions towards our goals. If you’re worried about your health when you get older, then you should start eating healthy and exercising regularly. If you’re worried about your finances, then you should start saving up for the rainy days. If you’re worried about your kids, then encourage them to take actions to help you ease your worries.

Remember that worrying about your loved ones doesn’t actually make them better. It only affects your health and your blood pressure. Your loved ones will need to take actions themselves. All you can do is to encourage them and help them move towards the right direction.

9. Drop your ego and be true.

We have our ego as our security guard that protects our self-esteem from being attacked. However, sometimes we become a victim of our own ego. This is when the ego takes control and we become too arrogant and act above ourselves. We distort the reality about us. We live in an illusion. Sometimes we do so because we believe it will take us somewhere. Sometimes we do it because it makes us feel good about ourselves.

Whatever it maybe, letting your ego become your front shield actually hurts you more on the inside because you can’t be your true self. You just live with lies. In the end, you just can’t take it anymore because you are just faking it and are attracting people who are also faking it. Over and over, you will become tired of it and feel like no one really understands you. This is when you will realize that you will never be truly happy unless you stay true to yourself and others.

10. Have an open mind.

Having a narrow mind can hurt you more than you think because naturally we as humans don’t like being disapproved of. We don’t like feeling like we’re wrong because it makes us feel rejected and unaccepted.

So if you don’t have an open mind which means you stand firmly on your beliefs and ideas and oppose others who think otherwise, you will feel extremely agitated and uncomfortable when people with different beliefs and ideas are presented in front of you.

On the other hand, if you have an open mind, you wouldn’t mind hearing about the different beliefs. In fact, you would embrace the difference, want to understand it better, and become adaptable and flexible in your approach. You wouldn’t have to fight with yourself in accepting others. You’d feel at ease with differences and feel positive about change.

Today, living also involves dealing with pollution; especially to those people living in major cities, and because of the frequent use of cars and other modes of transportation in those places, having a smoky environment is quite normal.

If there were good effects the modern society gave to us, it also had bad effects. With constant use of combustion engines, its damaging outcomes still linger in our environment. Millions of people are prone to its harmful consequences and chances of being suffocated are high due to the fumes expelled into the environment by large numbers of vehicles each day.

A proper exhaust control can decrease the effects of exhaust fumes from combustion engines. Tyre&Auto Southbourne Group listed below some of the benefits of having a good exhaust control:

Noise level becomes minimal

A proper design and installation of an exhaust pipe system can reduce noise pollution, and with the help of a professional car servicing company, this could be achieved with lesser trouble. A broken exhaust pipe could also lead to increased noise levels, so it requires the immediate repair of a professional car service provider like Tyre&Auto Southbourne Group.

Passengers are free from direct exhaust

Car exhausts were built at the tail end of a car, or raised high up, for a reason – and that is to keep the direct exhaust away from the passengers, or to support the escape of exhaust fumes into the atmosphere. Call a car service provider to determine any clogging or leaks to guarantee a more comfortable ride, because this predicament might cause the exhaust to enter through the windows or holes in the chassis.

Engine performance becomes much better

One of the main reasons for a reduced power and performance in your car is a defective exhaust pipe, due to the fact that it decreases the ability of the engine to maximize its burning capability. Inefficient disposal of the waste gases, which resulted from the combustion process, could also lead to a huge percentage of lost in the engine’s power.

Effective fuel consumption

Increasing the efficiency of fuel consumption requires appropriate burning, while a defective exhaust system could reduce car mileage.

A defective exhaust pipe system could also burn your money, not just pollute the atmosphere, so Tyre&Auto Southbourne Group suggests that all people should be responsible for controlling the quantity and quality of exhaust fumes.

Security and Risk Online: 12 Scams of Christmas you don’t want from your true love

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Christmas is around the corner and the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to watch out for the 12 most common scams during the holiday season. One scam will make you want to do your homework if you're shopping for a puppy this Christmas.

The BBB believes thieves are turning to the internet more often these days, because consumers are doing just about everything online. People tend to be more giving these days and add in the busy holiday schedules and you've got the perfect situation for a scammer to take advantage of.

"People’s guard is down. They’ll give information. They’ll input things in the internet and not think about where it’s going to go, who’s going to get it," explained Tim Maniscalo, President of the BBB of Central Indiana.

Here are the BBB's 12 Scams of Christmas:

Malware E Cards: E-Cards are a fun way to send holiday greetings, but be careful as naughty senders like to attach viruses along with them. Don’t click on emails from someone you don’t know or a name you don’t recognize. When in doubt, delete it out.

Counterfeit Goods: Luxury goods at low prices are almost always cheap counterfeits. Handbags, jewelry, watches, wallets, and electronic devices are among the top of the list of items counterfeited. Always buy from reputable sellers, and check the web for signs of counterfeit goods.

Look-A-Like Websites: It’s easy to recreate a website with a familiar logo, so beware when you’re shopping online. Some red flags are the webpage is in http format, not the secure https, no contact information, and even asking for payment by wire or money card. If you’re not sure which site to trust, go to bbb.org and read online reviews first.

Unusual Forms of Payment: Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay for holiday purchases using prepaid debit cards, gift cards, wire transfers, third parties, etc. These payments can’t be traced and undone. Use a credit card on a secure website (https-the extra s is for secure), and the lock symbol.

Santa Scammers: What better than a letter from Santa to light up your child’s face? Many trusted companies offer charming and personalized letters from Santa, but scammers mimic them to get personal information from unsuspecting parents. Always check the website’s privacy policies before entering any information to know how it will be used, if you don’t see a policy then leave that website.

Keep your computer secure by using firewalls, anti-spyware and antivirus software.

Fake shipping notifications: These can have attachments or links to sites that will download malware on your computer to steal your identity and your passwords. Don’t be fooled by a holiday phishing scam.

Grandparents scam: Seniors should be cautious if they get a call from a grandchild claiming to be in an accident, arrested or hospitalized while traveling in another country. Never send money unless you confirm with another family member that it’s true.

Phony charities: Everyone is in a generous mood at the holidays, so scammers take advantage of that with fake charity solicitations in email, on social media sites, and even by text. Check out charities at give.org before donating.

Temporary holiday jobs: Retailers and delivery services need extra help at the holidays, but beware of solicitations that require you to share personal information online or pay for a job lead. Apply in person or go to retailers’ main websites to find out who is hiring.

Travel Scams: The holidays are the biggest travel days of the year, which means scammers are lurking. Booking online is the most convenient way for many, but a scammer can be on the other end of the computer. Before you book make sure you are booking through a reputable and verifiable website. Also, be wary of online ads, and never wire any money to someone you don’t know.

Free gift cards: Pop-up ads or email offering free gift cards are often just a ploy to get your personal information that can later be used for identity theft.

Puppy Scams: Be very careful when buying pets online, especially during the holidays. You can end up with an unhealthy puppy from a puppy mill, or nothing at all because that dog never existed and it was all a scam.

Always research where you are buying the dog from and never wire any money. Be sure to pick up the puppy in person instead of paying someone to ship it.

godoficepantheon wrote a journal entry about coalition Against Insurance Fraud: Pa. Airbag-Fraud Bill Would Help Knock out Knockoffs on October 26th 2016

Coalition urges state Senate passage to protect consumers from shady body shops

Making airbag scams a specific crime in Pennsylvania will save lives and deal a blow to insurance scams, the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud has urged the state senate majority leader.

“Airbags protect us from serious injuries or worse. We rightfully expect they will protect us during crashes. The use of counterfeit or non-functional airbags jeopardizes that expectation,” director of government affairs Howard Goldblatt wrote Sen. Jake Corman.

HB 1476 cleared the state Senate Finance Committee this week, and faces a vote on the full Senate floor. The Coalition urged swift passage.

Motorists face a serious safety peril. Knockoffs generally won’t open properly in a crash. Drivers have died and been injured in crashes involving non-functioning counterfeits or fraudulently removed airbags. Knockoffs also spewed shrapnel and flames at crash dummies in federal tests.

Dishonest body shops can easily buy knockoffs on the black market or mainstream sites such as eBay or Craigslist. Counterfeits cost just a few dollars, though shady body shops charge auto insurers $1,000 or more for legitimate manufacturer originals.

“The ethically challenged repair shop thus pockets a large and illegal profit. This is insurance fraud against the consumer and insurer, helping keep premiums higher for honest drivers in Pennsylvania,” Goldblatt wrote.

Thirteen states have made airbag fraud a specific crime in recent years. HB 1476 would add similar protections for Pennsylvania consumers, Goldbatt wrote.

A Chinese national named Dai Zhensong tried to flood the U.S. with fake airbags made in his factory in China. They looked like legitimate models from mainstream carmakers. His airbags spewed shrapnel onto crash dummies in federal tests.

Thousands of airbags made it to the U.S. Many could’ve been installed on vehicles. Zhensong’s network was dismantled and he received 37 months in federal prison.

“HB 1476 will help protect Pennsylvania consumers from counterfeit airbags and the public-safety problems they pose,” Goldblatt wrote.

godoficepantheon wrote a journal entry about fDA Continuously Warns of Drug Counterfeiting on January 7th 2016

Fighting counterfeiting presents a substantial public health problem. The figures most commonly cited by international organizations indicate counterfeiting in an average of 10% globally, although this figure may be higher in other regions and pharmaceutical markets which are not fully aware of the extent of the issue in their region. The pharmaceutical regulations in these areas are not even fully anchored and sometimes victims of fraudulence headed by their own authorities. Counterfeiting is most rampant in regions where regulatory policies and systems of medicines are weakest.

On the other hand, according to World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 50% of drugs sold on online pharmacies and websites are fraud and trafficking in counterfeit medicines is estimated to generate a total of several hundred million euros in sales each year.

The battle against counterfeit medicines has brought together a lot of shareholders and mobilizes international movement conducted by the government, healthcare authorities, stakeholders as well as police authorities and non-profit organizations. WHO leads a number of participants particularly the United Nations (UN), The Peterson Group, a notable NGO operating in Asia Pacific, the local governments of Kenya, South Africa, Thailand with headquarters in Bangkok and Pattaya, agents in Jakarta, Indonesia and a base in Tokyo, Japan. These groups have since undergone different raids and spearheaded awareness programs to various local units, individuals and set of health professionals across the globe.

Another notable and most active sector of government that has been in the forefront of the battle is the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States.

Kaiser health, wellness facility coming to Elk Grove

On June 16, Kaiser Doctors and area leaders broke ground at what will eventually be the new Promenade Medical Office Building in south Elk Grove.

The two-story, 67,000- square-foot Kaiser Permanente facility will be designed to focus on matters affecting patients’ mind, body and soul.

It will feature a 50-meter outdoor sports track that will be part of a 4,000-square-foot Sports Medicine Center where athletes can be evaluated and rehabilitated.

In addition to the sports center, the medical office will also house adult medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, health education, radiology, laboratory and pharmacy services.

The building is scheduled to open in late 2011.

Elk Grove Mayor Sophia Scherman, Vice Mayor Steve Detrick, city council member Pat Hume, Dr. Richard Isaacs, M.D., and Dr. Lisa Liu, M.D., broke ground where the new facility will be built.

“Your presence in Elk Grove means more quality health and wellness for our residents,” Scherman said in a speech before they broke ground.

Dr. Isaacs and Dr. Liu also addressed the crowd.

Liu said the building will be “thoughtfully designed” with soothing colors, local artwork and a coffee bistro inside.

“We’re committed to making our facility a one-stop shop,” she said.

The new office will have a Healthy Living store where members can buy health and wellness equipment.

“We’ve been looking forward to this for quite some time,” Isaacs said. “Driving through the community, we’re aware of the economic impact in this area.”

Liu echoed that statement in her speech, saying, “I’m sure it won’t be long until this facility is surrounded by retail stores and restaurants.”

The building will be adjacent to the vacant Elk Grove Promenade Mall site where construction halted due to developer General Growth Properties undergoing bankruptcy.

When Scherman addressed the crowd, she discussed the unfinished mall behind her. “Although there is no set date, the mall will open,” Scherman said; “hopefully, within two years, it will be completed.”

Kaiser is thinking about the future, Isaacs said.

“We’re really hoping this will stimulate this part of the region,” he said.

In the past 10 years, Kaiser has added 30,000 new area patients. This new facility will be able to accommodate the health needs of current and future members.

Since 1999, Kaiser began phasing out the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic in construction and implemented more environmentally friendly construction materials in their building designs.

The Promenade Medical Office Building will be built so that solar energy panels can be added in the future.

Find a Doctor For a Fractured Ankle in Garden Grove, CA by Howard Marans MD

If you have a fractured ankle, it is important to seek treatment immediately to ensure your health and safety. At the same time, you want to be sure that you are getting treatment from an excellent physician with the skills to provide the best possible care. Below, we will look at how and where you can find the top doctor for a fractured ankle in Garden Grove, CA.

Choosing a Doctor

As you begin the process of finding a doctor, the first step is to identify the features that are most important to you. One of the key features to look for in a doctor is great communication. Communication can make or break a physician-patient relationship – it is present in every part of the process, from your doctor reviewing your symptoms to help get an idea of possible diagnoses, to the doctor sending you home with instructions for care after your treatment.

The doctor’s level of experience is also important. More experienced doctors often have better judgment and skills. In addition to years of experience in the field, the doctor should be a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who has a clean disciplinary record.

Tools for Finding a Physician

Once you know what you’re looking for in a doctor, the next step is to use the resources at your disposal to find a skilled physician in your area. Useful tools include:

- Primary care physician – Your primary care doctor is familiar with colleagues in the area, and may be able to recommend an orthopedist who other patients have had positive experiences with.

godoficepantheon wrote a journal entry about dr. Richard Isaacs: Kaiser’s summer internship program on October 31st 2015

Kaiser’s summer internship program gives high school students a chance to see if medical field is right for them

Valley High School senior Faith Allison thought she was interested in cardiology when she started a paid internship at Kaiser Permanente’s South Sacramento Medical Center this summer, but she liked the variety she saw in trauma.

Luther Burbank graduate Melany Caldera figured “you can’t go wrong with health care,” but she got dizzy every time she saw blood. Human resources, she likes.

The idea behind the Kaiser internship program is to give underrepresented and low-income students a close-up view of the career promise of health care before they make a career choice. A comprehensive program that focuses on careers in demand, it can also serve as a pipeline for future Kaiser employees.

“It’s really important for people who have an interest to see their destination before they begin their journey,” said Dr. Richard Isaacs, physician-in-chief at Kaiser’s South Sacramento hospital. “Our hope is they will go back to their own community with a better idea of what they can and want to do.”

The Summer Youth Employment Program is one of the community benefits Kaiser offers in exchange for tax-exempt status. There are 215 participants in Northern California this summer, about 30 in the Sacramento area.

Eleven high-achieving students were selected from 150 applicants for internships at Kaiser South Sacramento.

The full-time program runs for eight weeks. Students do workshops, projects and rotations in departments, meet weekly to share information — and get paid $8 an hour at a time when many high school students have trouble getting a job.

Other local health systems offer internship programs for high school students, too. But most are unpaid.

“Any organized professional experience we can expose young people to — and high school seems to be the focus now — can pique interest in and provide direction for college and medical school,” said Scott Seamons, regional vice president of the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California.

A lot of exposure’

Karima Ziyarmal, now 23, was a 2006 summer intern at Kaiser’s South Sacramento hospital.

Roy Ayers Celebrates 75th Birthday with Gilles Peterson

The meet up between the legendary American Pop Funk Artist, Roy Ayers and one of the world’s most acclaimed disk jockey, Gilles Peterson is one of the most awaited in the BBC 6 programme until it aired last September 12, 2015. It even coincided with the celebration of Ayers’ 75th birthday just two days before.

As the programme started to air, jazz music composed by Ayers himself was being played in the background, creating a lively atmosphere for those who are tuned in.

The two also reviewed Ayers’ first break in the music industry, his famous masterpieces and his exciting personal experiences without skipping a beat on Roy’s personal favorite composition, Everybody Loves the Sunshine.

Roy and Gilles looked back on Ayer’s first gig with Chico Hamilton, another famous Jazz drummer and bandleader, when they traveled to the Far East region of the world as they called Japan in 1965. Roy also applauded the famous jazz flautist, Herbie Mann and went on with his four-year friendship with him. He shared how Mann was able to help him and two others on their own financial budgeting and guided them through the business circulating in the music industry when they were traveling overseas in the late 1970s. Ayers also admitted that even when he is already 75 years old, he is still learning how to integrate the passion in music to the professional side of it.

Peterson also prodded on Ayers’ incredible record count. Roy was humble enough to admit that he has 91 albums, 43 albums short of Lionel Hamilton’s. Everybody Loves the Sunshine is pointed as his favorite before the actual demo was played exclusively for the audience to listen to. This record is also known to be one of Ayers’ signature compositions which earned him the title, “the Godfather of Neo Soul”.  Roy is also a key figure in the acid jazz movement, which is a mixture of jazz, funk and hip hop.

Throughout the programme, Gilles and Roy continued to talk about the nostalgic feeling of Roy’s music. Peterson also stated that he had been enjoying mixing it out in his performances worldwide. The records have also been a favorite of audiences from Tokyo, Japan, Jakarta, Indonesia and Egypt, much to the delight of the 75-year old jazz performer.

Gilles also commended Ayers for his enthusiasm in traveling and performing, even when he is already passed his prime. Roy’s great pull of the crowd during gigs is also praiseworthy. Ayers also expressed his gratitude to Pharell Williams, one of today’s most famous artists and producer, who publicly pointed him as his idol.

To listen to the funny and nostalgic conversation between Gilles and Roy, a recorded interview is still available for streaming in the BBC site and Brownswood Boiler Room.
